The Nintendo Switch Online service has just released Virtual Boy games, but there's a catch: you need the Expansion Pack subscription and a pricey accessory to experience the full 3D effect. But what if you don't have the official gear? Can you still enjoy these classics?
The Labo VR Goggles Conundrum:
You might be surprised to learn that the Labo VR Goggles, despite Nintendo's official stance, can actually work with Virtual Boy games on the Switch. If you have a Switch 1 or OLED Model, it fits like a glove. But for Switch 2 owners, it's a tight squeeze, requiring some creative disassembly.
Nintendo's recent clarification on the incompatibility of Labo VR with Virtual Boy might be due to the limited availability of the accessory and missing disclaimers. But for those daring enough to try, it's a viable option, albeit not the most comfortable for extended play.
The Arm Ache and Creative Solutions:
Holding the Switch to your face for long periods can be tiring. But for short bursts, it's manageable. For a comfier setup, you might consider detaching the Joy-Con or exploring third-party solutions, like a headset strap.
The Switch 2 and Labo VR Hack:
If you're feeling adventurous, you could modify your Labo VR to accommodate the Switch 2. While not officially endorsed, it's possible with some adjustments. We'd love to hear from anyone who's successfully repurposed their Labo VR!
TV Docking and Peripheral-Free Play:
Unfortunately, playing Virtual Boy games on your TV isn't an option. The games are designed for 3D, but it's a missed opportunity to not offer a 2D TV mode. And playing without the peripherals? It's possible, but the tiny screens will make you squint, and crossing your eyes will only make things worse.
Adjusting the 3D Effect:
You can tweak the 3D effect to your liking by adjusting the interpupillary distance (IPD) and image size. Nintendo will also add the ability to change the color of the visuals later this year, offering a break from the default red.
The Games:
The initial lineup includes 3D Tetris, Galactic Pinball, Golf, Red Alarm, Teleroboxer, The Mansion of Innsmouth, and Virtual Boy Wario Land. Wario Land is the standout, but we'd love to hear your thoughts on the launch games.
