A Historic Milestone for German Hockey
In a remarkable achievement, Leon Draisaitl has etched his name in the annals of NHL history. The German-born forward has become the first player from his nation to reach the prestigious 1,000-point mark in the NHL, a feat that has captivated the hockey world.
But here's where it gets even more impressive: Draisaitl, at just 30 years old, is the fifth-fastest player born outside of North America to hit this milestone. He joins an elite group that includes legends like Peter Stastny, Jari Kurri, and Jaromir Jagr. Selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2014 NHL Draft, Draisaitl quickly rose to become the highest-scoring German-born player in League history. In just his seventh season, he surpassed Marco Sturm's record of 487 points, a remarkable achievement in itself.
Marco Sturm, now the coach of the Boston Bruins, had this to say about Draisaitl: "He's the best German player to ever play the game. He's going to hit so many milestones, and I don't see anyone in the future who can match his talent."
And it's not just his German heritage that makes Draisaitl special. He's one of the best players in the game today, period. Last season, he won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for leading the League in goals with an impressive 52. In 2019-20, he took home the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player, the Ted Lindsay Award, and the Art Ross Trophy for being the League's top scorer.
In his first 11 NHL seasons, Draisaitl has consistently delivered, scoring at least 50 goals four times and reaching the 100-point mark six times. Since the 2018-19 season, he ranks second in the NHL with 796 points, trailing only his teammate, Connor McDavid.
With 47 points in just 34 games this season, Draisaitl is fifth in Oilers history in points. He's on track to catch Mark Messier and Jari Kurri later this season, and he's just one goal away from tying Glenn Anderson for third in Oilers history.
