A staggering number of over 180,000 residents in the Denver region experienced power outages on Sunday, plunging more than 100,000 customers into darkness, as reported by officials from the local energy utility.
By 4 p.m. on that day, Core Electric Cooperative detailed that the outages affected:
- 23,416 households in Arapahoe County,
- 20,242 households in Douglas County,
- 691 households in Elbert County,
- And a single household in Adams County.
At that moment, the cause behind these widespread outages remained unclear, and there was no information available regarding when electricity would be restored. The utility company had not responded to inquiries about the situation.
Additionally, Michelle Aguayo, a spokesperson for Xcel Energy, confirmed via email to The Denver Post that a significant outage was also affecting customers in the southeastern part of the metropolitan area. The impact on Xcel Energy customers was estimated to involve up to 145,000 individuals, although Aguayo noted that this figure was fluctuating as repair crews worked diligently to reroute power.
"The outage originated at one of our substations, and our teams are currently on-site addressing repairs and investigating the root cause," Aguayo stated. "We truly appreciate our customers' patience as we strive to restore power safely and swiftly."
In a related incident, Denver International Airport reported a "power incident" that disrupted train services connecting various concourses and other unspecified systems. This announcement came through social media at 3:49 p.m., with airport officials indicating that crews were actively working to reinstate service.
As the situation evolves, updates will be provided.
