A Call to Action: Battling Chronic Wasting Disease in Cranbrook
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal infection affecting deer and their relatives, is a growing concern in the Cranbrook area. The B.C. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) is stepping up to tackle this issue head-on, and they need your help, local hunters!
The Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship has planned a targeted management hunt from January 5th to 31st, 2026, with a specific goal: to control CWD and better understand its presence through increased sampling.
But here's where it gets controversial... With two additional cases confirmed this week, bringing the total to eight, and six of those cases linked to deer harvested near Cranbrook, the hunt's location and timing are critical.
The hunt zone is relatively small, encompassing both Crown and private lands, so hunters must be well-prepared and familiar with the area. BCWF Executive Director Jesse Zeman emphasizes, "Hunters should review all relevant maps to ensure they know the boundaries of no-hunting and no-shooting areas." The Conservation Officer Service will be patrolling to ensure compliance.
And this is the part most people miss... Hunters in the designated Cranbrook zone will have an additional deer harvest allowance, on top of the regional bag limit of two. This extra deer can only be harvested during the management period, so plan your hunt accordingly!
The hunt will target both antlered and antlerless mule deer and white-tailed deer. Your role as hunters is crucial in containing CWD. Your sample submissions are vital for disease detection and control.
While the province estimates CWD infection rates in Cranbrook's deer population to be under one percent, the situation is still serious. Thanks to the provincial government's investment, CWD sample processing times have improved significantly over the past year. However, the testing facility in Abbotsford has faced delays due to flooding, so some samples may experience processing delays.
CWD is a serious threat to deer and their relatives, including mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, moose, and caribou. It's a fatal infection that we must work together to control and eradicate.
BCWF's Zeman encourages hunters across B.C. to submit samples from every harvested animal to accurately track and contain the disease. Your participation is vital to this effort.
So, are you ready to join the fight against CWD? Your skills and dedication as hunters can make a real difference. Remember, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to wildlife conservation and disease management. Get involved, stay informed, and let's work together to protect our wildlife!
